For the Love of Tango

Eliminate the words neighborhood, knives, nostalgia, sadness and lost love from its verses and there would be no Tango. The lilting and melancholy melodies that linger on the border between maudlin and morose are all about the tragedy of life and the fecklessness of love. Sung from the port ‘barrio’ of ‘La Boca’ and other lower class neighborhoods of Buenos Aires the tunes are all about stories of revenge over loose, lying women and treacherous thieves with long knives and longer memories –and always, ALWAYs over the top, it’s the nature of the idiom.
